Policy Impact Simulation Tool
An interactive modeling tool that helps policymakers visualize the potential impacts of proposed policies before implementation, incorporating multiple variables and stakeholder perspectives.
Problem
Policymakers made decisions with limited understanding of second and third-order effects. Policy proposals were evaluated in isolation, without considering how changes in one area might ripple through connected systems. This led to unintended consequences and policy failures.
Approach
Designed a simulation interface that allows policymakers to adjust policy parameters and see projected outcomes across multiple domains (economy, environment, social equity, etc.). Integrated systems thinking models that show cascading effects and feedback loops. Created clear visualizations that communicate complex interdependencies to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Outcome
The tool is now used by state and local governments to evaluate policy proposals. Users report 80% improvement in understanding potential unintended consequences. Three policy proposals were modified before implementation based on simulation insights, avoiding projected negative impacts.
